"The best of all keepsakes... No other article of jewelry, gift or favor, is so valued as the Locket. It is a symbol of Faithfulness, cherished by the wearer for memory's sake and for the loved secret it holds. The Locket never grows old but becomes dearer with long possession. W & H Lockets are the best choice for keepsakes because their beautiful designs are backed by honest quality and workmanship."

This is an excerpt from the Wightman and Hough Company's advertisement in the October 1912 print of The People's Home Journal. Based in Providence, Rhode Island, Wightman & Hough Co. specialized in beautiful, quality lockets at the turn of the twentieth century. This gorgeous antique locket signed with a patent for the year 1907, features a rare design of polished squares set against carved diamonds set with paste stones -an antique process of creating sparkling quality faux stones. The pattern is intriguing with what seems like free spirited squares with well spaced stones but on closer look has a definite pattern of the diamonds alternating between horizontal and vertical (looking at the diamonds in rows) which creates slightly tipped squares back and forth from tip to tip. The back of the locket remains plain and monogram-free which is hard to find for this brand of locket as the W&H Co offered monogramming at purchase. The wonderful round locket opens to reveal one removable frame waiting to hold your beloved photograph. Inside you will, also, find the signature W & H Co heart (their tag line was "there is a heart in every locket") which "is your assurance of correct style, exquisite finishes, and dependable quality." I placed this very special antique locket on a new 14k gold filled cable chain hand finished with a lobster clasp and ring.
